3 replicas of unique tile tableau “De Wolkammerij”

A while ago a special tile picture was discussed during the program “Between Art & Kitsch”. It was a high-quality and flawless tableau painted with a situation of a Wolkammerij. It was striking during this broadcast that the importance of the Harlinger tile industry for NL was discussed for the first time! Harlingen was a leader in the production of Pottery & Tiles in the 18th century. The attribution of this tile tableau to Harlingen was relatively simple: The tableau mentions the client, the painter as well as the year of manufacture, resp. : “Siebe Ottes Salweda, Sijmon Ydes Keijser, 1777”.

Special loan

After this broadcast, the idea arose to return the tile panel to “home” by means of an extraordinary loan and to exhibit it in the Hannemahuis. In addition, the Eise Eisinga Planetarium expressed the wish to also be able to display the tableau because Eise Eisinga was a wool comb by profession. Within the family of the lender, people also became enthusiastic about helping to realize these wishes. It was agreed to alternately display the original tile tableau in the Hannemahuis and the Planetarium. To avoid an “empty” wall, we were invited to make a replica of this tableau, for when the original hangs in one of both locations. In the lender’s family, this was considered such a great solution that the wish for a replica was also discussed here. All in all, we have been awarded the honorable assignment to manufacture a total of 3 replica tableaux of the wool comb.

As close as possible to the original

After thorough color and style research, master painter Lucia Bazzano has succeeded in painting 3 beautiful tile pictures that are very close to the original.

If Simon Ydes Keijser had been able to experience this, we think he would be proudly satisfied with the fact that such high-quality tiles are once again produced in “his” city using authentic Majolica technology.

See with your own eyes

The tile pictures will soon be on display in both the Hannemahuis museum and the Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker.
